We are group of senior citizens organized in February, 2025 because we could no longer sit still and watch our democracy disintegrate before our very eyes. It is important to us, as seniors, that our voices are heard. We sponsored our first rally, a "Hands Off" demonstration. Thanks to multiple ways to post our events, we had 600 people show up in this suburb south of Seattle! Later, at the "No Kings" rally, a national day of protest, we had about 1600! Our bi-monthly demonstrations are attracting around 200 participants.
We collaborate with Des Moines Indivisible in the sponsoring of rallies and the sharing of an email list developed at our rallies. (contact them at desmoinesindivisible@gmail.com.)
Someone once asked, "Why do you do this? Do you actually think you can change things?" The response was, "We do this so things don't change us." Pretty good reason, we think. We also think that when we reach critical numbers nationwide, things will change. They MUST or our democracy is gone.
Four things, actually.
- Our most visible, of course, are our PEACEFUL rallies. We usually gather at the Big Catch Plaza on the first and third Saturdays of the month from noon to 2 p.m. but this changes when national rallies do not coincide with those dates. Special days may call for special actions as announced on https://www.mobilize.us/. Des Moines Indivisible usually rallies at the same location on Wednesdays from 3 - 5 p.m. They'll create special events in different locations, too.
- We coordinate postcard, letter, and phone campaigns as needs arise.
- We host Conversation Cafes to encourage civil dialogue.
- We work at sharing resources as we are able.
- Well, of course you are always welcome at our rallies. Bring your own posters, borrow one here, or make one on site.
